The Colorado Trip
Welcome to our Summer 2010 Vacation in Colorado & Utah. We drove out in 4 days, passing through parts of MA, NY, PA, IN, IL, IA & NE before arriving in Estes Park, CO to spend 2 days in Rocky Mt. NP. On the way, we saw license plates from every state except DE, apparently they don't travel! And, yes, we did see both Alaska & Hawaii plates on the journey.
The Rockies are everything that has ever been said about them. We were in 3 ecosystems within the park - Montane, Sub-Alpine & Alpine Tundra. For a look at what we experienced, see the photos, everything from pretty wildflowers to ice and snow. The trip on Trail Ridge Rd. being a highlight although the view was obscured by the clouds. The temp at 12,000+ ft. was about 39 with a never-ending wind. When the sun peeked through, the views were spectacular.
We finally saw some Big Horn Sheep on the last afternoon and the elk, of course, were everywhere, even stopping us in the middle of Estes Park's main drag! We also caught sight of a couple of Yellow-Bellied Marmots way up on the tundra. And numerous chipmunks and squirrels even posed for photos. After all the walking we did, we are ready for a few quiet days, riding the Cog Railway up Pike's Peak and then on to Durango to ride the Durango-Silverton Steam Train. So we are off to Colorado Springs tomorrow. Check again in a few days for more on the trip.
Enjoy,
Bill & Rose
