BADLANDS-YELLOWSTONE-GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARKS TRIP

Welcome to our “Yellowstone Trip”. This page will describe our return East.

We got on the road today, 9/5, about 9:15 AM and headed south on US 89/191. We again watched the terrain change from mountainous to more prairie like to cattle country. Wyoming is definitely big. We seemed to drive forever and most of the little towns (as in Population 100-300) are very spread out. There are probably more cattle than people! And, they must get lots of snow. Every major road had signs reading "Road Closed When Lights Flashing, Return to (the last town you passed.) We would surely not want to be here in the Winter.

Wyoming is very up on the environment and wildlife. We passed several pullouts with local information. Duck Creek was one of them. Once we were on I-80, we were outnumbered by many big trucks. And, of course, again Rose was driving when there was rain and road construction. They seem to re-do long stretches of road at a time, (like 20+ miles) shifting one side to the other so both are only one way. And the speed is slowed down to 65 mph.

Late in the day we saw several wind farms and oil wells. We stayed in an almost new Sleep Inn in Cheyenne, had supper & found a Wal-Mart to replenish supplies (food). Tomorrow we will drive across most of Nebraska.

9/6 We left Wyoming this morning and entered Nebraska on I-80. (This is a first for both of us.) I-80 is the major East/West road through Southern NE. Nebraska was central to the pioneers trek to the West, however, after the scenery in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, it is flat.(pix) Tomorrow it is off to St. Louis.

Trip Trivia We have seen license plates from 48 of the 50 states (including Alaska and Hawaii). We are missing DE and SC and hope to see them in the next few days.

Today we drove through parts of three states Nebraska, IOWA and Missouri. We arrived in St. Louis about 6 PM, found our hotel without any problem and had supper at "The Old spaghetti Factory" in the historic area called Laclede's Landing. The trip was uneventful except that there was lots & lots of traffic on the highway between Kansas City and St. Louis even though it was Labor Day.

On Tuesday we walked to the Gateway Arch and took a ride up in the trams. The view is good and not at all scary like the CN Tower in Toronto. After a mid-afternoon return to our hotel for a little respite, we headed out to the historic area and had supper at Morgan's Brewery. One of their offerings was a Sampler of 5 of their beers, which we shared with our supper until Rose knocked the last glass over.

With another long driving day ahead of us, we were back in our room by about 7:30 with our feet up and the TV on. We plan to drive to Columbus, OH tomorrow and on to Buffalo,NY the following day. Alas, our vacation is about finished. Time to start thinking about the next travel adventure!
